Maybe we should call them the PEEGS

Ever since the U.S. saw its debt downgraded to AA+ by S & P, market participants seem to have a metaphorical burr under the saddle over the fact that France retained its AAA rating–and had it reaffirmed. Most consider France to be on shakier ground. Credit Default Swaps seem to reflect the S & P view, although French 1-year CDSs are rising rapidly, as shown below. It seems there are rumors some of its banks may hold some toxic debt.

If this keeps up we might need to add an F to PIIGS, but PIFIGS doesn’t make much sense. Maybe we could just put a French accent on PIIGS and call them all PEEGS.

Heads up, Indiana drivers

Beginning July 1, in Indiana it’s illegal to “type, transmit, or read a text message or an electronic mail message while operating a moving motor vehicle.” A provision to prohibit talking on a non-hands-free cell phone did not make it into law, and it appears from the Bill’s excerpt above that one can “type, transmit, or read” messages while sitting at a stop light. Other than that, it’s unclear how the coppers will know whether you’re fiddling with a deck of cards–might not hurt to keep one handy.

It’s still not illegal to drive while eating a Big Mac…yet, or while putting on make-up, or changing clothes, or eating a Big Mac while changing clothes and applying make-up.

Why doesn’t he stick to investments and the economy, you’re wondering. Good question. Just couldn’t help being helpful.

Your Federal Reserve at work

Just in case you thought that all the Federal Reserve did was to shuffle funds off to Trilateral Commission members and Goldman Sachs–wait, that might be redundant–relax, they’re hard at work producing scholarly research. Why, just today, I received the usual dispatch of timely research papers put out by the Fed.
